Everything You Wanted To Know About Thermal Transfer and Direct Transfer Labels Printers
Thermal
printers are utilized to produce bar codes, price tags, and other labels. The
thermal transfer method of label printing requires the use of heat for
processing and printing on paper. The printhead of the thermal printer has a
wide variety of resistive heating pins that inject ink into contact material.
The
two types of thermal printing are direct thermal and thermal transfer. The
method of thermal transfer printing utilizes a heated ribbon to print images on
many different materials. Conversely, indirect thermal printing, no ribbon is
used, and the image is printed right on the label material.
Direct
thermal printing uses heat-sensitive and chemically treated media. That media
blackens in color when pressed under a print head, and there is no ink or toner
involved. This means direct thermal printing is mostly more affordable and
portable. The drawback to a direct thermal label is the possibility of fading
over time, which is not ideal for a lifetime product. It is an effective
process for receipts, shipping labels, and tickets, however.
Thermal
transfer printing utilizes a thermal printhead pressed onto a ribbon, which
then melts ink into the label material. Then, the ink absorbs into the label
material and is set permanently. So, the thermal transfer printing process and
the resulting labels have more longevity and durability.
For
thermal label printing, heat is applied to the ribbon, which melts the ink on
the material to form the image. The ink becomes so absorbed that the image
appears part of the media. This method offers image quality and durability that
is not matched by many on-demand printing systems. Such a form of label is
useful for product recognition, circuit board tagging, asset labeling,
inventory identification, and certifications such as UL / CSA.
